Luke's Evaluation

Well, Friday morning we were a little overwhelmed by the OT, Speech Pathologist, Developmental Therapist and Nutritionist that walked in our door to evaluate Luke! They were wonderful ladies and had a ton of questions for us. After we talked and they watched Luke play and eat, and yes, he did open up his mouth to eat (of course, right?!?). It turned out that he technically did not qualify for a delay of more than 30% but they are going to mess with the wording in their paperwork in order to get him services.
He will receive speech 1 time/week, OT 2 times/month, nutritionist 1 time/month, and the developmental therapist will reevaluate him in 3 months. They also suggested a PT consultation as well as recommended us to take Luke to a GI specialist because of his constant back arching. We were both a little surprised when they suggested all of that. Obviously the big concern is the refusal of food but when they started saying everything else, we kind of think they went a little over the top. We believe that kids develop at their own pace, in no way is he behind as far as his cognitive or developmental milestones. For example, he is army crawling all over the place and they were concerned about that because he's not supporting his weight on his fully extended arm. Another thing that bothered them was that he wouldn't reach for a toy that was placed to his far right or left because he didn't put his hand down to support his body so he wouldn't tip over when he reached for it. I don't know, I think that will come personally but I guess they are the experts.
So now, we wait. We have to get a case manager to monitor all of these specialists and then we have to get assigned someone for all of therapies. This is where we could end up waiting for awhile. If that happens, we'll have to decide if we want to wait or have private speech therapy.
However, all of this may be unnecessary because yesterday and this morning he opened his mouth up wide and ate, not a ton, but he did eat almost a whole container of pears, an enormous record for him!!
